Heart Disease Is A Killer!

Tuesday 13th January 2009

Diseases of the heart and blood vessels (particularly the arteries) are not only the single biggest cause of death in the modern world, particularly the Western world, but the most preventable. Don't be a victim - look after your heart.

A few simple changes can make a big difference..........

Diet

* Reduce consumption of dairy products (especially full-fat cow's milk and cheese) and red meat
* Reduce your consumption of alcohol
* Drink plenty of water (preferably mineral or filtered water)
* Consider an Omega oil supplement if you do not eat a lot of seeds or oily fish- you can buy the oil in capsules or in bottles to add to salads, yoghurts etc.

* Consider supplementing your diet with an antioxidant formula (these can be a mix of high-antioxidant plants and herbs such as grape seed or pine-bark extract, or a mixture of vitamins A,C,E and minerals such as selenium, spirlina and zinc)

Smoking
Smoking is one of the major causes of cardiovascular disease. People who smoke are almost twice as likely to have a heart attack as people who have never smoked. If you are a smoker, stopping smoking is the single most important step you can take to reduce the risk of having a heart attack and to live longer. It can also increase the risk of developing several different types of cancer and is the main cause of some lung diseases.

Exercise
Take regular exercise, enough to raise your heartbeat for at least 20-30 minutes three or four times a week.  This is usually known as aerobic exercise.  Remember, fitness cannot be stored.  It has to be worked at constantly.  Also, aerobic exercise is an excellent way to unwind emotionally and mentally as well as physically.  Good ways to exercise for a healthy heart are walking, cycling, swimming and jogging.

Stress reduction
Learn how to handle your stress levels and take time to relax.  New research has shown that relaxation is far more important in heart disease than was once realised.  You could consider:
* Physical therapies (massage, aromatherapy, reflexology, flotation therapy)
* Meditation and visualisation
* Balance and movement therapies (yoga, t'ai chi, etc)
* Talking therapies (counselling, psychotherapy, hypnosis etc)
* Expression therapies (art, music, dance, drama therapies)
* Energy therapies (acupuncture, homeopathy, flower essences etc)
